Gandhi's Footprint in Bihar
PURSUING THE MAHATMA ON THE INDIGO TRAIL
In April 1917, Mohandas Karam Chand Ghandhi, the brief less barrister who created a flutter in south Africa, came face to face with god, ahimsa and truth in Champaran, then a North Bihar district reeling under the exploitative yoke of European Indigo planters. The Mahatma, who later came to be known as the father of the nation, blazed this Indigo trail with what is a milestone not only in Bapu's life but also the history of India. The Champaran Satyagraha.
If Gandhi discovered truth, ahimsa and god here, Champaran – is God's beautiful tourist
terrain awaiting you. Lots of other exciting spots related to Buddha, the Ramayan and a scenic tiger reserve at the foothills of Himalayas are added attractions.
There's more. How about paying a visit to India's equivalent to Willam Wordsworth's Windermere or Shakespeare's Straitford on Avon? Did you know that Gerge Orwell, the 20th century literary giant, was born Eric Arthur Blair, a motihari in Champaran to Richard Walmesley Blair, A British deputy sub-agent in the Opium department, and his wife Ida Mabel Blair on June 25, 1903.
Not that Champaran is loaded only with history. It has the added spunk of pristine greenery even in scorching months of May and June. But the best time to come is between October and March when the air is cool to cold to cool again.
