Vishnupad Temple in Gaya !

Named after Vishnu, one of the trinity of Hindu Gods responsible for the preservation of earth, Vishnupad Temple in Gaya is one of the most sacred Hindu shrines and every good Hindu is supposed to visit the temple at least once in his lifetime to free ancestral souls and secure their salvation.

The 2500 years old temple symbolizing the final salvation of wandering soul was renovated in the eighteenth century by Rani Ahilya Bai of Holkar state. The three generations of 900 sculptor families brought from Rajasthan participated in the renovation work, which was completed in the year 1765.

The temple is the important ' vedi' or alter identified for the performance of ' Pindadaan'. There were more than 300 ' vedis ' in Gaya. Now only 50 odd 'vedi" exist where the ritual is performed. Located on the western bank of the mysterious river Falgu, the temple is a delight fot the art lovers for the sheer beauty of the skills of the sculptors who converted stone into a living monument. The golden dome and the flag mast erected at a height of nearly eight ft add to the majesty of the shrine.

Nearly half a million pilgrims from the country and abroad visit Gaya every year for 'Pindadaan" ritual.

Besides Vishnupad temple, there are other Hindu pilgrimage points in the religious township of Gaya, 100 kms to the south of Patna.

Though entry to the Vishnupad Temple is open only to the followers of Hinduism, there is a special non – Hindu gate, which takes non – Hindu upto certain point in the beautiful temple.
